What is Type 2?
The plug, the current, the carType 2 is the AC plug on almost every electric car sold outside North America. At public stations it is usually an AC charger, and at a caravan park or motel it may be the socket you plug your own cable into.
The plug sets the shape of the connection, not the speed: a Type 2 post can be a 3.7 kW kerbside unit or a 22 kW car-park charger, and the car's onboard charger caps what it accepts. Most public Type 2 sites in this directory sit in the 7–22 kW band and suit a stop of an hour or more.
Type 2 carries three-phase AC, so the same connector appears on 7 kW single-phase and 22 kW three-phase equipment. Whether a given station delivers the higher figure depends on its supply and the car, and the station page reports the site's peak rather than a claim about your vehicle.
What the label means
Type 2 is an AC connector. DC fast charging on these cars uses CCS2 or CHAdeMO, and a Type 2 socket will not accept a CCS2 plug.
Where Type 2 stations are
The states and territories with the most stations listing Type 2. Each link opens that state's page; the directory keeps the connector filter for a narrower view.

Type 2 stations by place type
Counts are stations that list Type 2, not plugs. One station can carry several connector types, so a station can appear here and in another connector's count. Prices are the networks' own per-kWh tariffs and can change by time of day. Counts from the directory data of October 2026.

Type 2 questions
Fit, power and priceHow many Type 2 charging stations are there?
EVDIR lists 838 public stations with Type 2 across 8 states and territories and 534 cities, with 1,793 charging stalls. 51 of them are DC fast (50 kW or more), and 25 reach 150 kW or more.
What is a Type 2 connector?
Type 2 is the AC plug on almost every electric car sold outside North America. At public stations it is usually an AC charger, and at a caravan park or motel it may be the socket you plug your own cable into. Type 2 is an AC connector. DC fast charging on these cars uses CCS2 or CHAdeMO, and a Type 2 socket will not accept a CCS2 plug.
Which cars use Type 2?
Nearly every EV sold outside North America. Destination charging while parked. The connector a car accepts is fixed by its inlet; an adapter may be needed for a different standard, and support varies by vehicle and station.
How much does Type 2 charging cost?
Of the 535 stations that quote a per-kWh price, the median is A$0.45 and 438 charge A$0.50 or less. Networks set their own tariffs, and some add a session or idle fee.
Are Type 2 stations always fast chargers?
No label guarantees a rate. Typically 3.7–22 kW; the station and the vehicle negotiate the actual charge. Check the station's peak power in the directory before relying on it for a quick stop.
