Cheapest electric cars in Australia (2026)

Every electric model with an Australian list price, ranked cheapest first — with the driveaway figure, the WLTP range the price actually buys and the list price per 100 km of that range.

The short answer

The cheapest electric car in Australia is the BYD Atto 1, listed from A$23,990 with 220 km of WLTP range. 170 of the 211 models in the catalogue carry a list price; the median is A$68,990. If 400 km of range matters, the cheapest that clears it is the GAC Aion UT at A$31,990.

A$69,000

85 of the 170 models in this catalogue are listed at A$69,000 or less. The most expensive car that still fits is the SKODA Enyaq Coupe at A$68,990.

Range you need

Range is the WLTP figure of the cheapest version under your budget, which is the version the price belongs to.

What it means

A list price divided by the range it buys is a crude figure, and the only one that puts a 220 km city car and a 530 km luxury car on the same axis. The cheapest car is BYD Atto 1 at A$23,990; the cheapest per 100 km of range is GAC Aion UT at A$7,440.

Range is WLTP, not a highway figure. A car rated at 400 km will do well to cover 300 km at 110 km/h — which is why the next column in the table is the battery and DC power, not a promise.

To run the BYD Atto 1 costs about A$68 of electricity per 100 km at the directory’s median public tariff of A$0.50 per kWh, and less at home.

The ranking

Every priced model, cheapest first

170 models. The price is the cheapest approved badge’s list price; the range and DC figure belong to that same version, so the row cannot mix a base price with a long-range specification.

A dash means the catalogue does not carry that figure for the model’s cheapest version — not that the car lacks it. The full specifications for each model are on the vehicle index.

Method

Where the prices come from

The catalogue is ev-wiki’s Australian snapshot, which carries each badge’s list price as the importer publishes it, and a driveaway figure where the importer states one. A model is ranked only if it has an approved, priced badge; an announced car is shown in the table and marked, but not ranked against cars you can buy today. Where a model’s badges disagree — a base car and a long-range one — the row uses the cheapest badge for the price and that same badge for the range, never the model’s best range beside its lowest price.

WLTP is the cycle the figure was measured on, not a prediction. The ev-wiki values are reviewed by its community rather than certified by the manufacturer, and the catalogue says so on every model page. Prices move when an importer changes them, so the ranking is as current as the snapshot date at the foot of this page.

Questions

Electric car prices, answered

What is the cheapest electric car in Australia?

The BYD Atto 1, listed from A$23,990 (A$25,500 driveaway). Its cheapest version is rated at 220 km of WLTP range. This guide ranks the 170 models in the catalogue that carry a list price; a model with no published price is not ranked, and neither is one that is only announced.

How many electric cars are on sale in Australia?

170 of the 211 models in this catalogue carry a list price from an approved badge, across 9 body styles. The cheapest is BYD Atto 1 at A$23,990 and the dearest is Rolls-Royce Spectre at A$770,000. The median list price is A$68,990.

Is the cheapest car the cheapest to own?

Not always, and that is what the second column is for. The cheapest car per 100 km of range is the GAC Aion UT at A$7,440 of list price for every 100 km it is rated for, which is a different question from the lowest sticker price. A cheap car with a short range can cost more per kilometre of range than a dearer one that goes further.

Do these prices include on-road costs?

The first figure is the list price — the manufacturer's recommended price before registration, stamp duty, dealer delivery and any options. The driveaway figure, where the catalogue has one, is what the importer publishes as the on-road price for that version, and the two can differ by several thousand dollars. Neither includes a state rebate, because those change and are not part of the price.

What does the cheapest electric car cost to run?

At the directory's median public tariff of A$0.50 per kWh and the BYD Atto 1's 136 Wh/km, 100 km costs about A$68 of electricity at a public charger — less on a home tariff. That is energy only: no servicing, tyres or insurance.

Which is the cheapest electric car with 400 km of range?

The GAC Aion UT, from A$31,990 driveaway A$30,990, rated at 430 km in its cheapest version. For 300 km the answer is the MG MG4 at A$28,990.

Why is the range different from the one in the brochure?

The range here is WLTP, the laboratory cycle the manufacturer and the importer publish, reviewed by the ev-wiki community rather than certified by the maker. WLTP is not a highway figure: a car rated at 400 km will do well to cover 300 km at 110 km/h with the air-conditioning on. Where the catalogue carries a community estimate as well as WLTP, the model page shows both; this guide ranks on the WLTP figure so every car is compared on the same cycle.

Which is the cheapest electric car with 500 km of range?

The GAC Aion V, from A$42,590 (A$45,000 driveaway), rated at 510 km in its cheapest version. Only 55 of the 170 priced models clear 500 km at their cheapest price, because most ranges are sold with a longer-range version that costs a good deal more.

Prices and specifications from the ev-wiki snapshot generated 31 October 2026. A figure here that disagrees with the importer’s own price list is a correction worth sending — report it.
